About
Third generation. Same long form practice.
Zach Kidwell is a third generation abstract expressionist painter working out of a garage studio in Dallas, Texas. His father, Brian Kidwell, is an assemblage sculptor with work in the Smithsonian. His grandfather, Al Kidwell, was an abstract painter with work in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Zach learned the way both of them did, by watching and by making.
His work begins with color, and with the question of where color comes from. Pigments are mined, ground, synthesized, and sometimes fought over. His ongoing series, The Secret Lives of Color and The Universe in 100 Colors, connect a single hue to geology, atmosphere, light, and the human decisions that put it on a wall.
